Três anos depois de lançar uma votação junto de críticos para encontrar os 100 maiores filmes americanos, a BBC Culture fez uma nova grande pesquisa, mas desta vez com os holofotes longe de Hollywood, procurando celebrar o melhor cinema mundial. Foi assim pedido a 209 críticos de 43 países que votassem nos seus filmes favoritos feitos principalmente num idioma diferente do inglês.
Os Sete Samurais de Akira Kurosowa foi considerado o melhor filme, sendo seguido por Ladrões de Bicicletas de Vittorio De Sica e Viagem a Tóquio de Yasujirô Ozu. Na lista dos 100 filmes, apenas 4 foram realizados por mulheres (4%, representadas por Chantal Akerman, Kátia Lund, Agnès Varda e Claire Denis), mas na lista dos críticos estavam 94 representantes do sexo feminino (45%) .
Os resultados mostraram também 100 filmes de 67 realizadores diferentes, de 24 países e em 19 idiomas. O francês é a língua internacional mais presente (27 filmes), seguindo-se o mandarim (12) o italiano e japonês (11 obras). No outro extremo, várias línguas foram representadas por apenas um filme, como a lingua portuguesa, com o filme brasileiro Cidade de Deus a ser o único representante (42º lugar).
