Foram hoje conhecidos os vencedores dos Independent Spirit Awards, prémios entregues a produções norte-americanas com um orçamento inferior a 20 milhões de dólares. Por essa razão, Roma de Alfonso Cuaron e The Favourite de Yorgos Lanthimos ficaram relegados à categoria de melhor filme internacional.
Numa cerimónia apresentada por Aubrey Plaza, os 6200 membros do comité que entrega estes prémios deram a principal distinção da noite – a de melhor filme – a If Beale Street Could Talk (Se Esta Rua Falasse), fita que viu ainda Barry Jenkins ser consagrado como o melhor realizador.
Nos atores, os Spirit Awards deram o seu habitual empurrão aos interpretes que têm hipóteses de conquistar o Oscar. Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) foi a melhor atriz secundária, Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) o melhor ator secundário, enquanto Glenn Close (The Wife/A Mulher) e Ethan Hawke (First Reformed/No Coração da Escuridão) foram, respetivamente, a melhor atriz e melhor ator.

Bo Burnham conquistou o prémio de melhor primeiro guião por Eighth Grade, enquanto Nicole Holofcener & Jeff Whitty foram premiados pela escrita de Can You Ever Forgive Me?.
Destaque ainda para: a vitória de Boots Riley e o seu Sorry To Bother na categoria de melhor primeiro filme, batendo no processo fitas como Hereditary (Hereditário); o triunfo do documentário – ausente dos Oscars – Won’t You Be My Neighbor?; a consagração de Sayombhu Mukdeeprom como melhor diretor de fotografia por Suspiria (fita que ganhou ainda o Prémio Robert Altman); a distinção de Joe Bini (You Were Never Really Here/Nunca Estiveste Aqui) pela melhor montagem; e do já referido Roma como melhor filme internacional.
Nos derrotados, We the Animals era tecnicamente o filme com mais nomeações (cinco no total), mas não venceu nenhuma estatueta, sabendo-se de antemão que não conseguira ser nomeado a melhor filme e melhor realizador. Leave No Trace também ficou aquém das expetativas, mas Debra Granik, foi premiada com o Bonnie Award – distinção atribuída pela American Airlines que procura honrar a visão inovadora e o trabalho inovador de realizadoras.
